Transmissions From a Possible Future: January-April 2012
by Sidney Carton
The editorial staff of The Loadstone Rock (consisting of me, myself and I) have recently come into possession of some curious documents. These scattered pages, purport to be the journal entries of an unnamed person living the United States between the months of January and April of 2012. While the dates alone make this record highly suspect, the record given herein is both so compelling and so chilling that we felt it might make for interesting copy. (Hey, it’s a slow week all right?)
January 20, 2012
Well, the Inauguration was today. President Palin gave a somewhat shrill address, wagging her finger repeatedly at the camera while promising to bring “a new morality” to Washington. Her plans are ambitious: Following the repeal of Roe v. Wade by the Roberts Court late in President McCain’s term, President Palin is formally endorsing a Constitutional Amendment formally banning Abortion in the United States. Naturally there were protesters present at the Inauguration, neatly placed in their razor-wire-enclosed “free-speech-zone” located several miles from the actual route the President-elect would be taking.
President McCain was unable to attend the ceremony, his health being very fragile after finally ramming through NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia. That in and of itself is worrisome, for Russia, under President Putin has promised severe reprisals and has cut diplomatic contacts with members of the alliance.
Closer to home, the food has gotten better here at the shelter. I have still had no luck finding a job, not since the last company I worked for collapsed after the crash of 2010. I still have nightmares of the news footage on that day, I don’t think there was a single upper-story window left unbroken by a despondent broker after the Dow lost 8,000 points on a single day. Life in the new faith-based shelters is not so bad, but it was awkward explaining to my little Clara this morning if her friend Farah wasn’t allowed to stay here because of the cloth she and her mommy wore over their hair. (They were Muslims) Anyhow, its time for evening prayers, I have to go.
March 3, 2012
Its been a while since I last wrote. The shelter caught fire and burned down on Valentine’s Day. Clara and I are currently staying with Saul and Jackie out in the country. It’s nicer here than in the city, but it’s still very cold. Things are getting scary out there. The anti-abortion amendment passed and already the trials are beginning. There is a serious movement underway to declare English as the only official language in the US. The upside to all this anti-immigrant hysteria is that work has begun on that border fence we were promised. Saul and Jackie have promised to take care of Clara for me, while I head down there for work.
March 20, 2012
Its warm down here in Arizona, at least during the day. The work is hard and the pay is low, but it’s a job. Scary stuff on the radio tonight, the President of Georgia, feeling stronger due to his membership in NATO, has begun to threaten the parts of his country that have broken away. (I can’t for the life of me even try to spell them) Putin has threatened that any attack on these regions will result in another war with Russia, to which President Palin has said will end up in a war with us.
March 22, 2012
Well, the crap hit the fan tonight. The leaders of the breakaway Georgian regions petitioned for and were received as parts of the Russian Federation tonight. The President of Georgia freaked out, and his newly-rebuilt army is massing for the attack. Apparently NATO forces are on high alert, although the French and the Germans are trying to enter into talks. President Palin was on the air for a while, explaining to us that it was God’s will that we defend Georgia, so here we go.
March 23, 2012
The Georgian President launched a preemptive strike into those regions today, no one knows what is going to happen. President Palin warned Putin that any attempt to interfere will mean war. I called Clara tonight, she misses me, I will be trying to get back to Ohio soon.
March 25, 2012
The Russians have struck back at the Georgians. President Palin has said we will be at war with the Russians by midnight if they don’t pull back.
March 28, 2012
I’m not sure really how to write this, no one knows what is going on. We have had no radio or TV for two nights. There were some huge flashes in the direction of Tuscon and since then, we’ve heard nothing, no cell phones or other communications either. Most of us fear the worst, we’ve been nuked. Saul, Jackie and my little Clara are probably dead, they didn’t live too far away from Cincinnatti. I’m scared, there’s nowhere to go.
March 31, 2012
Some people came down the highway from the North. They were almost dead from what I’d guess was radiation poisoning when I saw them. The story they tell is awful. Phoenix is gone, Tuscon too. LA, San Francisco, Denver. No word on anything east of the Rockies, but we imagine it is the same. Supplies are running low here at camp, we will soon be out of food and water.
April 1, 2012
This will be my last entry. I can stay here and starve or try to get help elsewhere. A couple of us are going South to see if there is any help to be had in Mexico. It’s ironic, we spent all this time building a wall to keep them out, now we are going to try and cross that wall in order to survive. I’m not going with them. If Clara made it, she’s still with Saul and Jackie, I have to find her, I have to at least try, so I’m going North. Whoever finds this journal, try to be wiser than we have been, for I fear there is little hope for me. I’d wish myself luck, but I don’t think there’s any left.
The few tattered pages we recieved ends here.
May it not be so…
This is scary enough as fiction, nevermind as a plausible real-life scenario… Truly not the reality I want to create! Perhaps if enough of us vote for someone like Ralph Nader, we’d have a decent president — at the very least, we’d be sending a ‘wake-up’ call to the self-serving, clueless, ‘business-as-usual ones in Washington.
Actually Mark, for the very reasons you list I’m voting for Barack Obama, but to each their own…
Really? Palin President? This certainly is Fiction, someone from the future needs to write about Dec 21st 2012, and send us that journal. This is rediculous.
If you had read the heading under which this post is written, you would note that I tag it as fiction also, spell check is your friend, the word is ridiculous, much like your idea that the world might end on that date. Check the facts, the Maya didn’t predict that the world would end, but that a 5200 year epoch of their calendar would end and usher in changes.
ALL
A fine bit of fiction. Reality may well be stranger and stronger. IF one follows cycles theory, we are culuminating in a large set of cycles, dominated by social unrest, fiscal irresponsibility and cataclysmic global physical upheavels. The end point of this particular set, is at 2012.
Combined this cyclical set, with the Planetary, Sun, and Galatic alingments, and one has to contend with larger cycles.
Enough to say, the following years, 09-12, will be upheavels, unrest, social misbehaviors, and lots of theories as to why.

Did any one notice that the next president will not take office untill 2013?
Excellent point! I can’t believe I overlooked that. Oh well, it is fiction, and was never intended to be accurate anyway, even I don’t think Palin would start a nuclear war. Oh, and the President of Russia is Dimitrii Medvedev, Vladimir Putin is now the Prime Minister. So this story is indeed full of holes.
